Lithuania, US, RARE DARIUS-GIRENAS TRIANGLE OVERPRINT 60 Centu (Sc. C60) Stamp on CRASH Cover No. 115, 1933.
Very few of these covers (maximum 2 or 3 of possible 60 Centu covers with Poz. 2 cuts – see the 2nd scan) are known. US stamps cancelled BROOKLYN, N.Y, Jul 15 1933, were flown by Darius and Girenas. This cover expecialy rare, because was adddressed back to private backer of the flight Mr. J.J. Kleman, Jr. rather then to the AERO CLUB in Kaunas, Lithuania. Back stamped: KAUNAS Centr. 18.VII.33.
*** Darius and Girenas airplane LITUANICA left New York on July 15, 1933. On the night July 17 LITUANICA reached West Prusia , 115 km north of Berlin, and crashed there in forest near Soldin. After flying 6.441 km, only 650 km were left to final destination Kaunas, Lithuania.
***The plane carried several hundred different type covers (most numbered), whose sale would have helped to cover the flight expenses. The plane LITUANICA did not burn. The covers were recovered and delivered to Kaunas and cancelled - backstamped July 18, 1933.
***The Overprint 60 Centu ( 500 Copies Issued on June 8, 1933) in black: DARIUS – GIRENAS NEW YORK – 1933 – KAUNAS (see Sanabria 1963 THE WORLD AIRMAIL CATALOGUE, Lithuania 60 Centu. Cat. # 89, note: catalogue price in 1963 was $75.00 on Cover, see scan #3) with triangular Lithuania Scott # C60 (Michel # 345).
